What a man. I still remember being in his class Fall semester of my senior year. I don’t remember the name of the class because it was a long time ago, but I remember it was an extremely important class as a senior with a very large group project. It was a class you made sure you attended! I’d had surgery and had already missed a class because of it and refused to miss another. I went to class in pain, on meds and unable to concentrate. After a bit of instruction he had us split off into our groups, Al walked over to me and asked if I was alright. He told me to go home, rest up, not worry about my group as he would explain, and return to class when I was ready. I look back on that often as it was probably the first time anyone had told me it was okay to take care of myself and other things could wait. Valuable lesson outside of the material he taught, and it’s something I try to pass along to the college students I work with now.
