My name is Daniel Kangas.I grew up in Oulu, WI, as such, went by “ Carter’s Corner” almost everyday.My parents names are Oiva and Dorothy (Frostman) Kangas. My mother was a teacher and one of her students was Corky. In May of 2017, we celebrated her 100th birthday. I sat nearby as she greeted her many friends and former students and was called over once in a while for an introduction. That’s when I heard something loud and clear, “Oh Corky”, she said.Then called me over and with great joy said “This is Corky Carter”. She died a little over two years later, another huge gathering with lots of tears of joy.
When I saw Corky’s obituary, all I could think about was the gift he gave my mother by coming to her birthday celebration. That memory will be with me the rest of my life.
