Oh, My Dearest Kris, I know you would probably scoff or laugh at me referring to you as “dearest” but at this moment it’s a descriptor I can’t help but use. You’re one of my dearest friends and I will miss you for the rest of my days on this earth. I’m so grateful for the time we have had together and my heart aches thinking about how my life is going to change without you here.
We met in 2010 at the College of St. Scholastica Bachelor of Social Work Program and soon after we met, we became good friends. It was so easy – you are so easy going and enjoyable to be with. At your core you care for everyone you meet, and you quickly became my friend, confidant, study partner, encourager, sounding board and shopping buddy.
Immediately after graduation at St. Scholastica, you talked me into applying to the University of Minnesota Social Work Masters Program and after I stopped laughing at the idea when you kept bringing it up, you helped me with the details of the application and you proof read my application so well one would have thought it was my application to fly into space for NASA or run for Governor.
You never left my side at any step of the way through the program. We worked full time, attended school full time, completed internships, consoled each other when we felt we were just too overwhelmed, and in the end, we rocked it and put up awesome GPA’s for two middle aged broads. At the absolute depths of tiredness, you were my tireless encourager (and continued proofreader) and without you, I would have never completed the program. Years after graduating, I’m still so proud of us.
Since graduation both of us worked in county child protection roles and again you have been my sounding board, advisor, and a mentor in so many ways. Thank you for all the times you listened patiently while I complained about things, the times I vented about my family and the advice or feedback you would give me. I appreciate how you’ve helped me throughout the years to find peace with the things I could not control or change. I’m completely unsure of how I’m going to find peace with your passing, but I know you will be encouraging me to find it and forge forward doing the best I can in all my endeavors. I will remember you always and cannot wait to see you again my dear friend.

Kris was such a wise presence on our cases: unflappable, calm, and caring. She stayed focused on what really mattered and was willing to let the rest go. She was down to earth and so kind. So sad to hear of her passing… I was hoping she’d have many years left with us.

Rest easy, Kris, you’ve earned it. Truly the best of social workers. She loved the people she served and fought hard for them. She gloried in their successes and victories and she felt their losses deeply. She was a steady, kind, hearty, and beloved coworker and we will never be the same without her. If angels sing like Adam Lambert, she will be happy.
