Shortly after meeting Jim and upon his return from turkey hunting at Dan and Lynn's, I naively asked if he had shot a turkey. He proceeded to tell me about all the trillium, hepatica, bloodroot, bellwort, etc. he had seen blooming and all the warblers that he spotted in the trees while sitting in his turkey blind...and oh, by the way, he did bring home a turkey. This was my first hunting lesson, with many more to follow. It became very apparent during the following years of our friendship that hunting, fishing, loon counts, canoe trips, cutting firewood, gardening, etc. were just excuses for him to be outside enjoying nature and anything that resulted beyond that was a gift.
Several white pines (his favorite tree) have been planted in his memory...

My condolences to the family and friends of Jim Rack. Jim was a cherished friend of mine. Etched in my memories are his presence on several canoe trips: one down the Mississippi River and canoeing a circle of lakes around the Deer River Area in Northern Minnesota one Fourth of July. These 2 trips produced many memorable adventure events. At Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings at Mary Blickenderfer's lodge at Otter Lake, his wild turkeys that he shot and smoked and pickled beans that he grew and processed himself were always welcomed additions to friends holiday feasts connecting us all to the Wilds. Jim was also a work colleague of mine. At the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources his GIS analysis played a major part of a northern goshawk Nongame project. Jim's love of nature lives forever in his friends thoughts and memories.

Here are 2 photos relevant to the memory of Jim. The Plymouth was filled with his belongings when he moved to Mankato, MN in the early 70s.
The second photo is documentation of Jim actually "trimming" his lawn in Minnesota with a machete.

I was thrust upon him. He probably never wanted a sister. As children we did not like each other, but we matured and Jim was there to assist at mile stones in my life. He was the first one to buy me an alcoholic drink when I turned 18. He gifted me with the Tea for the Tillerman album by Cat Stevens. I flew on a commercial airline for the first time to visit him in Mankato in 1975. He read a poem at my wedding and agreed to be Gillian's godfather. Jim made numerous, arduous trips to visit his family and friends back east. Joe, the kids, and I drove out to visit Jim and Nancy in Minneapolis in 1983. He was a very gracious host and thoughtful tour guide. Our parents taught us to appreciate Nature through sharing frequent camping trips, the brothers helped with haying on our uncle's farm, hunting, fishing, and gardening experiences. Yes, Nature called Jim and he responded with ardor, appreciation, and respect. --Barbara Rack Sciacca

We've had the pleasure of knowing Jim for almost two decades. He was a movie buff and a serious reader (he had expert lists of best movies and novels that he was working his way through so he'd experience these cultural hallmarks). He loved music. And he loved the outdoors. Last winter, we ice-fished several times with Jim on the beautiful lakes that Mary and the Vanns live by, and he hoisted many northern pike. These were unforgettable days. It doesn't get any better. I managed to post a photo with this, though I couldn't figure out how to attach a video of Jim circling the hole as he drew out his line patiently, waiting for the right moment to set the hook. His timing was impeccable.

Ten days before Jim died I got a call from Jim. I was on a mountain ridge in Glacier Park on a hiking trip and he was in Solvay House in Duluth. He felt he was in a better place than I was.
He sounded so happy to be surrounded by caring staff and visitors. "I'm were I need to be and it feels good to be here. Everyone is so kind and I feel overwhelmed by everyone caring".
I was able to visit him the afternoon he died. He was a bit restless, sat up some and had some water. The staff were very attentive and he settled after some medication. He smiled while holding a feather and a rock from a Lake Superior beach, named each one and relaxed to sleep.
He would have a similar slight smile while sitting at the VFW bar listening intently to the performers and having a cold beer.
Jim knew joy and peace. We will all miss his presence in our world. ...Nancy Zupan

To Jim's family. My deepest condolences. May your grief pass gently through you. Jim and I could not be more opposite, yet we have been friends for decades. When he sold his land some years back, my hopes of his returning to Hyde Park were extinguished.(I sold your Hyde Park family home). Unfortunately, we were not in communication for the last couple of years, so this obituary is a shocker - making my heart race. I am so sorry- he must have suffered. You wrote a lovey obit for Jim... you captured his spirit! Definitely a unique man. I always tried to envision his home he was working on... did Jim ever finish working on his house? Jim would tell me about his friend Mary and his natural surroundings - I would picture Grizzly Adams and Henry David Thoreau. Our High school reunions will have a big void. I have always looked forward to spending time with Jim when he made his faithful pilgrimage back home. I will not forget my friend Jim. My heartfelt sympathy to Jim's family and friends.

One of those spring trips to the boundary waters with co-workers. Note the ice the group is standing on, and the absence of "bad clothing". You taught us well, Jim - I never would have made a trip like this without you to lead the way!

My deepest condolences go out to all Jim's family and friends. I am sad that Jim left us when he did. I was hoping to visit him at Solvay house as I know he was comfortable and at peace there, and I was hoping to speak with him at least one more time. During this last year and few months when Jim was sick and he knew that the end of his life was near, I was.always impressed with how at peace Jim seemed to be. I called him up fairly frequently to find out how he was holding up, and offer whatever assistance I could provide. In the conversations that followed I always felt uplifted by Jim and his peacefull, wise and grateful tone, and I was always touched by how much grace he seemed to have when he knew his time on the earth was coming to an end. Thank you Jim for your generosity and wisdom and for all that you gave to us.
