Stephen and Maryann, Debbie and, of course, Julia: My deepest condolences. Dawn was a true original - witty, brilliant, kind, and tremendous fun. She was an outstanding lawyer, a wonderful friend and a devoted mom. It is so hard when something like this happens to try to summarize your relationship with someone into a few words. Dawn was a mainstay of support for me through law school and afterwards. We were in the same small section, and lived in the same building on the same floor just down the hall from one another. It's just as well we became fast friends because we would have had a hard time avoiding one another if we hadn't. Not very long into my law school career I managed to accidentally lock myself out of my apartment at 9:00 at night on a Friday. The resident caretaker had gone out for the night (and as it turned out, stayed out for the whole weekend). I ended up knocking on Dawn's door to beg for help as I had no money, no phone and was afraid to leave the building because I wouldn't have been able to get back in. Even though we didn't know one another very well yet, she kindly let me sleep on her floor when we couldn't get hold of the caretaker, produced a Pillsbury toaster strudel for breakfast the next morning, and helped me find a locksmith to break me back in to my apartment. Having Dawn down the hall was a tremendous comfort since it was my first time living entirely on my own with no housemates. Together with some of the others in our apartment building, and small section, we formed a tightknit group that ate dinners together, went out for ice cream study breaks to the Ben and Jerry's, watched the X-files and Buffy, and hosted a couple of Orphan's Thanksgivings. I am sure that Dawn is one of the reasons I made it through the challenges of the law school experience. I will be eternally grateful to have known her.
