I was so pleased to have met Dan recently. He worked with my son Ryan at Edina house associated with Mt Olivet Rolling Acres. Even though I did not know him very long, Ryan and I loved Dan. He had a heart the size of Texas. Ryan loved him. I was so devastated to hear he died. He accomplished so much at Ryan’s home, as he always had tools in his cars trunk. My sympathies for your loss. Dan was a bold soul who took initiative to contact head of road construction for me when I moved into the house. The lead asked if we would want to load a front loader up with bags, to drop off since we could not drive to the door. Dan and construction workers on site ended up carrying two bags each to the door.

I was both sad and shocked after hearing about Dan's passing. I was fortunate to have worked with Dan at Lakeville North and to witness his love of life, his work/students, his family and his friends. He always had a giggle laugh and a smile on his face. He had a kind and caring heart and he was honest to a fault. I became his taxi driver one year and we had the best conversations to and from work. We talked about some of his struggles and he was always trying to overcome and improve himself. We recently met up for lunch and were able to catch up after a few years of not being connected. He was the best that I had seen him with a very good handle on his life. We covered A-Z and we both left feeling good that we met up and planned on doing it again. We parted with a hug and told each other to take care. Peace be with you Dan my friend. Lynette Spurgin

My heart is heavy after hearing the news of my good friend Dan. We taught and worked with the Special education population at Lakeville North high school. Dan had a heart of gold and loved kids! We also shared a passion for the mighty band RUSH and often talked about seeing the band together, that would have been so fun. More importantly than bands or job duties however; Dan and I had a number of heart to heart conversations about the Lord and he really desired sobriety and also even deeper getting to know Jesus as his personal savior! I encourage anyone reading this, that today is the day of salvation and all you need to do is call on the name of the Lord and you will be saved. I know Dan would have endorsed this message!
Romans 10:9-13
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Everyone who had the good fortune to have had Dan as an important part of their life is grieving his passing.
Dan always had a smile, a handshake or hug and a joke for me even if we hadn't seen each other in years.
I entrusted Dan with my 3 precious daughters over the course of 14 years in the volleyball scene. Dan helped teach them not just the vb skills they needed to develop, but how to be a teammate, an unselfish athlete, a kind yet competitive player, leadership skills, self confidence, and a positive attitude about life.
Dan was supportive of everyone he knew, he was honest about abilities but inspired each of my daughters to never give up on becoming the best player they could be, and most important, although he obviously loved volleyball, he put things in perspective for his athletes in a very competitive and sometimes arbitrarily cruel sport. Volleyball was an important part of their lives for many years, but Dan taught them that our journey on this Earth is so much more than just sports. What is important at the end is becoming the best person you can be and treating all people with respect, kindness and genuine empathy.
The world is a sadder place without Dan today. Thank God we can trust that his examples have been passed on to many current and future coaches.

Dan worked for the Minnesota Sports Federation at the Sports Dome in Spr Lk Pk and Sports Cafe in Fridley . He always had a friendly , can do attitude and brightened everyone's day ! Sense of humor was terrific and he was careful not to be too serious. Had a real soft spot for others less fortunate than him and always seeking a life of meaning and giving !

I've know Dan since Mary and I were in third grade, a few years ago! I've been volunteering my time with Pat for the last three years and Dan would stop in every once in awhile to see Pat. He was always in a good mood with a smile on his face. No matter what kind of stress he was going through, he never showed it. I will miss Dan and his smile.

Our hearts are heavy tonight learning of the passing of Dan. We’ve known him for many years through volleyball. He coached for the big clubs and we’re part of Chaska Juniors, a community based club but he was always so supportive of what we did, and so often would reach out to our kids and our coaches acknowledging their accomplishments. He was truly amazing and a great friend to us all.

Dan’s path and mine through the volleyball world crossed paths many times. At Spikers in Fridley and at Northern Lights Juniors, we worked the same job. He always had a smile and a joke.
The memory that sticks out the most was one day at Spikers, His 14s team was in a battle with Anoka’s 14s team. There was a call that didn’t go Dan’s team’s way and those parents let the reffing crew have it. Dan stepped off the court and told his parents he wasn’t going to coach their daughters while they were in the gym. He waited until they left and then went up to the reffing team and apologized before continuing on with coaching the kids.
He was always a man of character and it showed in moments like that and in how much he loved others. The volleyball world lost another great one today
Rest In Peace
