To Coleen, Chris, Ian and all of Joe's family and friends: We miss Joe with you. Dave and I were able to spend many late hours with Joe, often at Sher's Kitchen, usually talking about the intricacies of Ozzy and many others' music. Joe's laugh was great. Coleen and he in the kitchen making dinner, in a tiny apartment, filled with his favorite books, he hauled a ridiculous spiral staircase in the back of his pickup for us, like a great dinosaur headed home, saving my car from imploding when it was too frozen, and often, speaking from his heart, truthfully amidst silly jokes. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He was always kind and generous with his time. He acted as though being a friend was all he had to do that day. Watching him meet fatherhood with happiness and care, love and patience was just awesome. He loved all of you with great depth, and humility, awed by each of you in turn. He thought a lot about each person in his life, and with kindness and gentle understanding. We will miss you Joe. Be at Peace, our true friend.

I lost touch with Joe and had not seen him for some time. But, we spent several years working together at Trane. And, we were Applications Engineering partners in development of Trane’s Tracer MP580, a programmable controller that used a form of graphical programming, the first of its kind for Trane. Joe and I spent countless hours arguing about the nuances of the graphical programming “blocks”, the fundamental elements of this programming tool that our field technicians would use. How would our technicians use each block? How would it work? In our debates, Joe employed his unique and brilliant wit and poignant sarcasm to maximum effect, and I would often go home, my brain hurting and exhausted. I miss the intellectual workouts that Joe brought to our work, and I will miss him as a colleague and friend.

My first memory of Joe was calling in to tech support and asking how I could simulate a 3rd order polynomial in PCL..Joe laughed and said, "That's a good one...i never wrote PCL to do that!"
He worked some magic and two days later I had what I needed.
Always pushing the envelope and trying to get the field what we needed. You left a hole no one will fill. Thanks Joe!

I have many fond memories of Joe, his easy laugh, his many bad puns, and his awesome drumming. The memory that stands out to me most happened back in 1983 when Joe was attending NDSU. He knew my dad had graduated from The University of the Pacific with a degree in Music Therapy and had gotten to play drums with the Dave Brubeck Quartet at an alumni concert. Joe found out that the Dave Brubeck Quartet was coming to NDSU and bought four tickets for my dad, my grandmother, himself, and me. It was such a special surprise for my dad. Joe was a very caring person. He will be greatly missed.

Years ago when I was starting out at Trane, I went to Joe with a question about pulse accumulators. Some time later I left his cubicle with a better picture on the mystery of them as well as more electrical engineering trivia than I had bargained for. The second time I came around asking about pulse accumulators, he handed me his notebook, complete with a few optimized PCL routines he had come up with to run the required logic with a minimum number of lines of code. Then smiled and said 'you're the expert now'. He was a crafty one, to be sure.
Joe also tried to teach me how to play guitar. I loved those nights in his basement with Marcus struggling through 'Lodi'. I never really became anything near proficient, but he was forever entertained by my ability to play 'string' on one particular note that I had actually managed to hit when it came along.
My deepest condolences to his family, he was a great guy.
