Perry had been on my mind as of late. I met him in the summer of 1994 when I was hired at the U of MN-Morris as an assistant football coach. We immediately bonded. My office was right next to his. When he left to go to SWMSU I soon moved into his old office at the end of the hall. He left a note for me that read, 'welcome to the office of advancement. Don't break the chain'. I think the last I spoke with him was in 2007 when I was coaching at Indiana State. Shocked to read of his passing. My heart goes out to Kathy and the children. Perry was a good guy, and I am better for having had him in my life. RIP Coach!

I was so sorry to recently hear of Coach Ford’s passing. He coached my late husband Dennis Winfield Jr (1971-2004). I had the honor and privilege to know his wonderful wife and kids as well. The opportunity to live and attend school in Morris was life changing for Dennis and I. Coach Ford made that happen and I’ve always been so grateful for what he did for my family.
Godspeed! With love,
Alexis, Joshua, Jonathan and Jeremy Winfield.

Although Perry was a much better tennis player than I could ever dream of being, Perry treated me as an equal team mate on both the Bismarck Demon and BJC Mytics tennis team. Perry's prowess on the football field, basketball court and tennis court were admirable. I will always be proud to know that I could talk to Perry and be considered a team mate.

I learned of Perry's death while attending the Final Four in Mpls. this week. I almost always visited with him at these NABC events, after many years of competing ag. his teams at UM Morris and Southwest St. Good coach who put together some tough teams. Very shocking news. While watching the championship game on Monday night my thoughts were of how much he would have enjoyed that game. RIP

Rest In Peace my friend. We had some great times during our childhood living on the south side in Bismarck! Your dad would take us to play hoops at the Armory and pitch to us till it was too dark to see! We became teammates at BHS placing 5th at state in your Senior year! I am sad we did not stay in touch much but was honored to know you and your family during our childhoods!

Perry was one of my favorite Labor Day weekend pals up at Mesaba CC. He was always genuinely interested in what was new in my life and it was always a pleasure to sit at his table. The last few years when he was in worse shape, the fact that he showed up with such a positive attitude was a terrific lesson and he added so much to The Northwest. Condolences to Perry's family and friends - he was a gem!

Perry was bigger than life, and one of kindest, cockiest, and brilliant men/athletes I've known. He was my first real mentor as a coach and as an eventual teacher. He always supported, teased, and slid that crazy, all-knowing grin out at the most inappropriate times. I've thought of him many times over the years with gratitude and a big smile. I'm so sorry he's passed....I have no doubt he's loving you even more from the other side. God bless....

Perry and I played softball for/with the Capitol Bombers in the mid to late 60's in Bismarck. His father Loren and my father Walter Dockter I believe worked together in Governor Guy's administration. We were just kids but got our opportunity to play thanks to our Dad's. Although we didn't share the same pathway's, I've never forgotten him and how much fun we had being 'grown-ups'. My deepest condolences to his family.

My heart goes out to Perry's family ... Kathy, Nicole & Matthew. I had some great memories with Perry in his high school & college days back here in Bismarck, ND. Mostly on the tennis courts with a worthwhile friendly rivalry & even a short stint by me coaching high school tennis. I will never forget when he came back from staying with his uncle in Florida which I believe had a lot to do with his later tennis involvement! I asked my AM Family agent if she knew of him even though he was in Minnesota & she said "yes". I also remember Perry's dad as a very fair local inspector stopping in at my business facility.

I was a former player for Perry at the Univ of Mn Morris. Like all great coaches he had very high expectations for us, and a true testament to him as a man, we did not want to disappoint him. He was a great coach and a tremendous man who came into a lot of young people's lives at a crucial time.

News of Perry's passing hits hard here in Morris MN, home of U of M-Morris. Upon getting the news, I remembered first the "Midnight Madness" events at the gym that Perry helped make so fun. It was the official start of men's basketball practice, literally at midnight. It was around Halloween so - guess what? - students came in costume. Perry had a strong PR sense and was a fine recruiter. He reached out to everyone in a way they won't forget.

Cindy and myself were deeply shocked when we heard of Perry's year's long battle with various cancers recently. The Fords were the dearest of neighbors for us with their time in Sioux Falls, and we are blessed to have those years as fun memories. Perry never had a cross word for anybody, truly a gentleman. Perry even tried to teach me golf. Nothing wrong with the teacher, it was the student that was pathetic :). We will miss Perry greatly and Kathy, you and the kids are in our thoughts and prayers each and every day.
