Obituary of Marjorie Joyce Mickelson

Marjorie Joyce (Martinson) Mickelson, 93, of Duluth passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, February 25, 2018. Joyce was born May 6, 1924 to Selmer and Marjorie (Campbell) Martinson in Minneapolis, the eldest of three children. Joyce was proud to have grown up in many locations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. Her summer vacation visits with relatives in Clinton, MN were especially precious to her. She graduated from Superior (WI) Central in 1942, received her Bachelor of Science from Duluth State Teachers College in 1946, and her Master of Arts in 1971 from UMD. She was united in marriage in 1947 to Richard Henry Mickelson in Duluth, MN. The world inspired Joyce to be a doer. She loved her active life as a prolific artist, an energetic educator, a passionate world traveler, an engaged family member, and a lifelong learner. Her artistic career included 25 years teaching in the Duluth Public Schools; a long relationship with the Duluth Art Institute as instructor, exhibitor, and student; and a range of service to First Lutheran Church from its inception. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Alan and Kathryn Martinson; and her husband. She is survived by children, B. Diane Bailey of Duluth, Rick (Bonnie) Mickelson of Eau Claire, WI, and Kitty (Steve) Hoden of Fremont, NE; 10 grandchildren, Chris and Mark Koprowski of Tokyo, Japan, Patrick Bailey of Duluth, Eric (Amy Brown) Mickelson of Bellingham, WA, Anna (Mike) Zanko of Stillwater, MN, Pastor Steven (Rebecca) Hoden, Pittsburg, CA, Phillip (Danielle) Hoden of Morton Grove, IL, Matthew Hoden of Jacksonville, FL, Dr. Laura Hoden of Omaha, NE, Allison Hoden of Fremont, NE; 6 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, March 9, 3 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 1100 East Superior Street in Duluth. Family and friends may gather one hour prior at the church with refreshments following in the church fellowship hall.
