Obituary of Joel R. Ness

Joel R. Ness, 58, of Duluth, passed away Aug 25, 2015 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. He was born Sept 7, 1956 in Northfield Minn., to John and Norma Ness. Joel attended East High School, UMD, and achieved his Master's degree in Technical Communication from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in N.Y. He was known as the "Mac Guy" during his 20 years in Information Services at UMD. When Joel wasn't working, spending time with family, or helping a friend he could be found on the volleyball court, sailing, wind surfing, competing in a triathlon, snowboarding, or surfing in Lake Superior. He is preceded in death by his father, John Hjort Ness. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Jennifer (Schelin); son, Connor; mother, Norma; brothers Dave (Ngoc Dung) Duong, Kyle (Karen) Ness; sister Leigh Ann (Paul) Viche; nieces and nephews, Gian, Linh, Kaleigh, Abbey, Rieger, and Andy. CELEBRATION OF LIFE: 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015 in the Cremation Society of MN, 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth.
