Obituary of Daniel J. Burrows

Daniel J. Burrows, 65, of Duluth, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2015 surrounded by family. Dan was born April 7, 1950 in Minneapolis, MN to Harold H. and Emily (Sirotiak) Burrows. Dan grew up in Minneapolis and in 1968 moved to Duluth to attend UMD. Dan met and married wife Carol (Peterson) Burrows while attending UMD, and graduated with a BA in Philosophy and Psychology. After graduating, Dan took a job with the newly formed ITSS at UMD, and he worked there for 39 years before retiring in 2013 from his management position. Dan taught himself guitar as a teenager, and played his whole life. Later in life he transitioned into songwriting, and performed locally at the UMD Farmer's Market and at his church. Dan joined the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth in 1981. He was on the board many times, President of the congregation, and accompanied several performers. Dan loved the outdoors, especially gardening, camping in BWCA, time at the family cabin on Round Lake in Tamarack and Red Squirrel Resort in Bemidji. Dan was tenacious and enjoyed problem solving, which served him well at work, church and at home doing both large and small scale home improvement projects. Dan was preceded in death by his father, Harold H., when Dan was 4, and his step-father, Frank Hardt, in 2011. He is survived by his wife Carol; son Scott (Mandy), and daughter Jessica Friess (Joshua); mother Emily Hardt; brother Harold (Renee); sister Sharon (Tommy Brown); grandchildren Elliott and Aaron Burrows and Fiona and Vivian Friess; and aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Friends and family would like to thank Essentia Hospital and Hospice, and the Benedictine Health Center for their support and loving care of Dan. A memorial service will be held on September 12, 2015 at 11:00am at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth (UUCD) at 835 W. College St. in Duluth. Lunch will follow the service. Contributions may be made in his memory to UUCD or any foundation that researches cures for cancer, Parkinson's or Lewy Body Dementia.
