Terrance Timmerman

Obituary of Terrance Timmerman

Terrance L. Timmerman, 65, of Eagan (formerly of Davenport), passed away peacefully and surrounded by family Nov. 5, 2015, after a long and courageous fight with brain cancer. Terry was born on Oct. 13, 1950, in Davenport. He graduated from Davenport Central High School where, in 1965, he met the love of his life and wife of 44 years, Martha. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served in the Philippines and Japan. Terry and Martha were married in Davenport on March 6, 1971, at Trinity Lutheran Church. After returning from service, Terry enjoyed a long career with the United States Post Office and served as the president of Branch 506 of the National Association of Letter Carriers for more than two decades. He loved carrying mail and his post office family. When his health forced him to retire from the post office, Terry enjoyed a second career with Habitat for Humanity Quad-Cities, serving as its volunteer coordinator for seven years. Terry’s work for Habitat revitalized him, and the people with whom he worked and interacted touched his life immeasurably. Terry was a lifelong resident of Davenport and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. In the summer of 2014, he and his wife relocated to the Twin Cities to be closer to their children and grandchildren, and so that Terry could teach his grandkids to fish. Terry was preceded in death by his mother, Lois; father, Alfred; and sisters, Kathy and Teresa. He is survived by his beloved Martha; daughter, Kelly Moffitt (Mike); son, Jeff (Amy Schwartz); grandchildren, Isaac, Lucy, Owen and Sam; brothers, Steve (Kathy) and Mike (Betsy); special relatives, Carolyn Crews and the Neffs (Jerry Sr., Barb, Jerry Jr., Tammy and Jennifer); and lifelong friends, John and Louise Erps. Terry’s family would like to extend a special thanks to the doctors who gave him more time, including Drs. Uhm and Lanzino (of the Mayo Clinic), and Dr. Kernstine (formerly of University Hospitals, Iowa City). Thanks also to Pastor Peter W. Marty of St. Paul Lutheran Church for his spiritual guidance, friendship and compassion. A celebration of Terry’s life will be Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady St., Davenport. The visitation will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. and a luncheon thereafter. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Habitat for Humanity Quad-Cities or the American Cancer Society. One life ends; another begins. Don’t be saddened by the impermanence of it. Instead, just love each other and yourselves. Terry would have wanted it that way. As his favorite band put it so well: “And, in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.” In his end, Terry was embraced by love. He carried that love with him to his next adventure. Until we meet again…
