Obituary of John Pope

Pope, John Melville peacefully passed away after a valiant battle with Amyloidosis and Alzheimer's disease. He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Pope, his mother, Elizabeth Pope Frank and his sister, Anne Pope. John was born on July 1st, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa and moved to Rye, New York at an early age. He attended Williams College for his undergraduate degree and then Stanford University for his MBA. He was recruited by General Mills and moved to Minneapolis in 1964, applying his strong leadership and abilities to a number of executive positions. In 1985, he started his own consulting business, The John Pope Company, specializing in strategic planning for small to mid-size companies. John particularly loved working with and mentoring people and over the years developed a broad network of colleagues and friends. He was active in leading several networking groups, including Skylighters, Daybreakers and the 49'rs. John was a long-suffering Minnesota Vikings season ticket holder for over 30 years and was able to continue to attend games, with his son-in-law Michael, right up until the playoffs this year. John was passionate about traveling and was always half-packed and ready for the next trip. In the last 20 years, he was able to visit 53 countries. John was loved for his warmth, his gentleness, his humility, intellect and especially for his amazing smile. He loved meeting new people and keeping close friends and family nearby. He is survived by his wife, Marlene, his daughters, Kara Tempel (Scott) and Lindsey Powers (Chris), his step children Monica Stone (Michael), Dennis Schuller (Julie) and Nathan Schuller (Silvia). Also, by his grandchildren Adam, Lauren, Alexandra, Dalen, Harrison and Genesis. His step-son, Richard Humphries (Ayu) and his sister Barbara Pope. Last but not least, his beloved Boxer dog, Gracie. The family would like to thank NC Little Hospice and caretakers for their very special loving care of John during his last days. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 18th at 11:30am at the Edina Country Club, 5100 Wooddale Ave, Edina, followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Amyloidosis Foundation or the Alzheimer's Association.
