Obituary of Percy C. Hughes
Percy Caesar Hughes JR. was born April 9, 1922 in St. Paul, MN. He was the elder of two sons born to Virginia & Percy Caesar Hughes SR. After graduating high school, Percy JR. enlisted in the United States Army. He married Louise Neal. To this union were born Percy Caesar Hughes III and Cheryl Lee Hughes Hollins. This marriage was dissolved through divorce.
Percy later married Judy Perkins. This marriage ended with the death of Judy. After Judy passed, Percy later married Dolores Windsor (Dee). They became a blended family with Percy’s two children and the addition of Dee’s five children (Kathy, Terry, Toni, Chuck and John) , from her previous marriage. Charles and Kathy, along with her husband, Russ Grant went to heaven before Percy did.
Percy was employed many years as a mail carrier for the United States Post Office. His athletic ability was vividly demonstrated through playing baseball, golf and tennis.
Percy was well known throughout Minnesota because of his superb musical talents. He played the saxophone, clarinet and also wrote music for his band, The Percy Hughes Band. Percy also played tennis, but taught tennis as a certified professional instructor. He has received awards for his vast musical and tennis skills. Percy was inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall Of Fame and also the Minnesota Tennis Hall Of Fame.
Percy was an avid fisherman who had many pleasant memories on the Minnesota, Wisconsin and Canadian Lakes. He spent the majority of his time on Lake Mille Lacs with his sons, Percy III, John Violette, his grandson Harold, his brother Clayton (deceased), life- long friend O. Donald Smith (deceased) and wife, Dee. There are many wonderful memories of family gatherings at the cabin on Fish Lake in Wright County. These celebrations he actively participated in until his health declined.
Percy Was a life- long member of the Episcopal Church and participated in worship service through his music, instrumental and choral.
Percy transitioned to his heavenly home in the early morning of December 30, 2015. He leaves to cherish his memory: a loving wife, Dolores: two sons, Percy III (Jackie) and John Violette (Sue): three daughters Cheryl Hollins, Terry (Gregg) Pendy and Toni Ringgold: thirteen grandsons: eight granddaughters: fourteen great grandsons: sixteen great granddaughters and numerous extended family and loved ones.
