Obituary of Geraldine Martha Barstow

Geraldine Martha Barstow. Born: February 13, 1919, Minneapolis, MN. Died: January 14, 2016, Edina, MN. Preceded in death by her parents, Jerome and Fern Wensole; son David Christopher; and husband John Barstow. Survived by her children: Kristine Barstow (Sam), Joc Barstow, Stephanie Ceniglio (Alan), Claudia Sellner (Chris), and Andrea Carroll (Michael); grandchildren, Jacquelyn (John), Martha (Brad), Samantha, Jack (Leah), David, Seth (Carrie) and three great-grandchildren; Alex, Elisabeth and Andrea. After her graduation from West High School in Minneapolis she attended the University of Minnesota. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, earned a bachelor's degree in Home Economics/ Textiles, and soon after married her sweetheart Jack. Fondly referred to as Gerry, Glasses, or GiGi, she was the embodiment of a post-world war wife. Her strength, independence and faith would prove the cornerstone of a household containing five children. Bowtie and Glasses' mutual love & affection would see them through 70 years of marriage! Her love of the outdoors was fostered at a young age, traveling to the Gunflint Trail well before its designation of a Wilderness Area. While cultivating numerous gardens, she dutifully relocated resident squirrels to better homes in various Edina City Parks. No garden was dearer to her heart than "Happy Hallow" at their beloved Fox Lake cabin. The cabin and shoreline set the stage for year round activities. Many a night the drinking lamp was lit where "Foxies" were made and enjoyed. She led an active life of volunteering, a trait she shared with her husband. She worked with the Girl Scouts of America, Meals on Wheels, Mount Olivet Church Home, and as a reading mentor for Burroughs Elementary School. She spent many years volunteering with her favorite ceramics group at Jones Harrison Residence creating many small treasures for her family. She loved, and was loved by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; going great lengths to be a special part of each of their lives. Service to be held at 11 a.m. Friday January 22, 2016 at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, 5025 Knox Ave South, Minneapolis, MN 55419. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to: N.C.
