Obituary of Evelyn Soberg Tonkin

Evelyn Soberg Tonkin passed away Jan. 16, 2016, after 98 years. Fred and Marie Soberg welcomed Evelyn into their lives, and their Lester Park home, July 8, 1917. Evelyn attended school at Lester Park Elementary, East Junior High and Central High School and went on to become a beautician. Harold Tonkin made Evelyn his bride Jan. 21, 1939. They made their home in Lakeside where they raised four children. As a member of Lakeside Presbyterian church, she taught Sunday school for a time. Evelyn's large extended family was the center of her life. When her children were teenagers, she went to work at Surf & Sand nursing home as a beautician. Evelyn moved to St. Ann's Residence in 2003. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold in 1994; sisters Clarice Arnold and Marie Tonkin; brother Raymond Soberg; and her son, Jeffrey Tonkin. Ev is survived by her sons, James (Bonnie Gene) Tonkin and Gary (Cathy) Tonkin, all of Duluth; daughter Janis Chambers (Ed) of Grand Rapids; grandsons Scott and Kevin Chambers of Grand Rapids and Devin Tonkin of Duluth; special niece Marilyn (David) Halvorsen of Superior; and many nieces, nephews and friends. The family wishes to thank the caring staff at the Benedictine Health Center and St. Ann's Residence. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, in Lakeside Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Lakeside Presbyterian Church.
