Obituary of John Patrick Teahan
Age 93, longtime resident of Minneapolis, passed away March 2, 2016. Son of John and Georgianna Teahan (nee St Denis), raised in Greenfield, Mass. At age 18, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp months after the start of WWII. Stationed at Parris Island as training instructor in small arms and Judo while serving with the Provost Marshal Military Police. Later assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Bennington CV-20 as a Fleet Marine. Participated in major invasions of Pacific islands, the first air strike against Tokyo, assault landings on minor islands, and on Japan's home island just days prior to Japans formal surrender. He and a small group of Marines entered downtown Tokyo, some of the first Americans to enter the city. Awarded three Battle Stars for major combat actions. Married the late Barbara Teahan (nee Wolf) in 1949. Barbara passed in 1968. John held various positions in the financial field in the Twin cities. He enjoyed outdoor activities, his cabin at Bluewater Lake, his beloved schnauzers, in addition to patrolling the neighborhood block and socializing. He was a direct person, seldom lost for words, a man of integrity and a friend's friend to those who knew him. He is survived by a brother, Robert and sister-in-law Beatrice of Bridgeton, MO, several nieces and nephews, and close friends. Visitation 9 am Funeral Service 11 am, to be held at First Memorial Edina Chapel 7110 France Ave. S., Edina, Monday, March 7. Burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. If desired, memorials directed to the local North Star Marine Veterans Organization.
