Obituary of Alverda Evelyn Wall

Alverda Evelyn Palmer was born October 7, 1921 at home near Red Owl, South Dakota to LeRoy and Grace Alverda Palmer, the third oldest of their twelve children. She grew up attending one-room country schools, and graduated in 1940 from Newell, SD high school. After graduation, she attended business school in Rapid City and worked part-time at a bakery. There she met Halbert Wall, a shy farm boy from eastern South Dakota, an engineering student at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, who came in frequently to buy doughnuts. He asked her to a school dance, and they began dating. When Hal graduated from college in 1942, the government sent him to Curtis Wright Air Force Base in Columbus, OH to design planes for the war effort. Verda followed later and they were married in December 1942. When the war ended, they returned to South Dakota and settled in Pierre where their three children, Colleen, Steven, and Greg were born. In 1962, the family moved to Roseville in the Twin Cities. Verda was a homemaker – cooking, baking, canning, sewing, and gardening. She especially loved flowers. She participated in her children's activities and served as a scout leader and 4-H mom. She volunteered at church and sang in Methodist Church choirs for over thirty years. After the children were grown, she had several part-time jobs outside the home. In retirement, she and Hal traveled around the US, visiting family and friends, and to Alaska, England, Scotland and Ireland. They spent some winters in Florida and Arizona, and summers at the family cabin near Hackensack, boating and fishing with children and grandchildren. She loved the loons, ladyslippers, and pontoon rides around the lake. Verda died March 17, 2016 in Eden Prairie, MN.
