I didn't know John well, but I have always felt like I knew his heart and was the beneficiary of a deep unexplainable connection to him. Many years ago (March, 1989), when my grandmother passed away, he came all the way down from Northern Minnesota and visited me as a young boy. He brought me and my siblings kites and took us out flying them. And then life happened and I don't remember seeing or speaking to him again for 35 years, until a couple months ago.
Over the years I have often thought of this shadow of a man that appeared in my life and gave me something out of the kindness of his heart. This picture of love, before I even understood the depths of what love meant, has stayed with me for decades. I was fortunate to get to see him again before he passed, and thank him for his generosity. That small gift he gave me had a profound, lasting impact on my life in a way I can barely express with words.
While I was visiting him, I was surprised to see that he had pictures of my kids, from the Christmas cards I would send him, on his wall! I am still in awe that he thought of me without me knowing. I think of him often, and will continue to remember his kindness, until I see him again.
