Obituary of Joyce Boman

Joyce Marie (Roginski) Boman, 88, of Duluth, passed away April 14, 2016, from complications of Alzheimer's, in Benedictine Health Center surrounded by her loving family. Joyce was born May 21, 1927, in Duluth, to Stanley and Helene (Galteau) Roginski. The oldest of four girls, she was the last surviving member of her family. Joyce was raised in West Duluth where she attended St. Jeans Catholic grade school, graduating from Stanbrook Hall. She also attended the College of St. Scholastica. As a young woman, she worked at Walgreens, where she met her future husband, Herman "Bud" Boman Jr. They were married for 68 years until Bud's death Dec. 28, 2015, just 3 months ago. They raised their five children in the Lester Park area of Duluth. Joyce worked at Ducane Industries and First American National Bank before landing her dream job at the City of Duluth. She worked as an accountant at Water and Gas and then the treasurer's office, retiring in 1990. She received the 1990 City of Duluth Hall of Fame Award for exemplary volunteer service and was the August 1989 City of Duluth Employee of the Month. Joyce was a very community-minded woman. She was involved in the local DFL, was the first woman president of AFSCME Local 66 (also served on the executive board and City of Duluth negotiating committees), and the Duluth Central Labor Body Board. She was a member of the Lions Club (Lioness), Ladies of the Elks, Lakeside AARP, St. Michael's Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She also volunteered at the Used-A-Bit shop for many years. She received several awards including the 1986 AFSCME Local 66 Outstanding Volunteer Service and Community Leadership Award and the 1988 Joseph Weisinger Community Service Award. She had many passions and hobbies including knitting, rug-hooking, Bulldog Hockey (men's and women's) and reading club. She had season tickets to the Duluth Playhouse and organized bus trips to the Twin Cities to see the touring company of the Metropolitan Opera. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Bud; her parents; and sisters Shirley Riner, Adele Lomanto and Dianne Messina. Joyce is survived by her five children; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren: Adele "Bunny" Hartwick (Jon) and their children, Meghan and Brandon (Ginger) Hartwick; Joel (Vicki) and their children, Deanna (Shawn) Fitzpatrick, Andrea (Earnest) Jeyaraja, Allison (Michael) Ryan, Janna (Jesse) Daniel, Bethany (Brian) Pavlock, Kara, Julia and Jared Boman; Kevan and his children, Jessica, Jennifer Myers and Kali (Eric); Mary (Michael) Schiltz and their children, Michael (Cassandra Neperud) Malmquist and Merisa Malmquist; and Brian (Lorri Townsend) and his daughter, Crystal (Nate) Atkinson; her brother-in-law, Dobby Messina; and several nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the fine care she received at St. Ann's and at Marywood, the advanced assisted living unit at Benedictine Health Center. The staff at Marywood are exceptional; our Mother could not have spent her remaining days in a better place. Joyce will be buried at the same time as her husband at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on May 17, on what would have been their 69th wedding anniversary.
