Obituary of James Louis Lipovetz Jr.

James (Jim) Louis Lipovetz Jr., 63, of Duluth, MN passed away on December 1st, 2024. Jim was born on May 24th, 1961 in Hibbing, MN to Joanne and James Lipovetz Sr. Memories from growing up and playing sports with his family and friends in Hibbing were very near and dear to his heart. He graduated from Hibbing High School in 1979 and went on to earn his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from the University of MN. He traveled extensively for two years working as a field service engineer before working with his father at his company JLX Filters that he went on to own and run for the remainder of his career.

Jim met the mother of his children, Joan, in 1991. Together they raised their two children Jonathan and Jenna. Jim’s children were his pride and joy. This year Jim became a grandfather and was lovingly referred to as Papa Lip. Jim loved his granddaughter Madeline more than anything and was with her every chance he could get.

Jim had a love of sports and the outdoors. He was an avid snowboarder and spent many years teaching kids to snowboard at Spirit Mountain. He loved hunting, fishing, hockey, golf, and tennis; and wrote his own column for the local newspaper called “The Lip on Sports.” Jim also enjoyed spending time at his condo in Florida.

Jim is preceded in death by his father, James Lipovetz Sr. He is survived by his son, Jonathan Lipovetz; daughter, Jenna (Cody) Willemarck; granddaughter, Madeline Willemarck; mother, Joanne Lipovetz; sister Cathy (Bing) Timmerman; sister Debbie (Tim) Newman; former wife and good friend, Joan Lipovetz; and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will be held at 9am on Saturday 12/7 at the Cremation Society of Minnesota (Duluth). Service will be held at 10am with a luncheon to follow.

Internment to be held at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing, MN at a later date.
