Obituary of Daniel R Stolquist
DANIEL R. STOLQUIST September 2, 1946 - October 22, 2024
Daniel R. Stolquist, 78, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2024 at Solvay Hospice House, Duluth, MN, with his family by his side.
Dan was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on September 2, 1946, and was the son of Albert and Emogene (Shaw) Stolquist.
Growing up, Dan took pride in owning his two businesses: Wisconsin Amusement and the Game Connection with his (then) wife, Shirley. Dan spent many years working hard, maintaining the businesses, making them successful, and providing for his family. He often took his daughters along on the jobs, where they met many wonderful people over the years.
Dan was an avid outdoorsman with a deep love for nature. He enjoyed a wide range of activities, including deer, duck and goose hunting, as well as hunting partridge and rabbits. Fishing, ice fishing, camping and four-wheeling were also among his favorite pastimes. Dan’s passion for the outdoors extended to flying his powered parachute, where he found joy and freedom in the beautiful scenery. Above all, he cherished sharing these experiences with his family, creating lasting memories together in the great outdoors.
Daughters Dani and Kari were reminiscing about a couple of funny childhood memories, laughing about a flashback when it was time to filet the fish they all caught together. When Dan would find Dani and Kari poking at the eyeballs of the fish, he would get so mad and yell out, “Stop torturing the fish and poking at their eyeballs!” Kari simply continued to poke the fish eyes while Dani hollered back, “Isn’t it torture that you’re cutting open the fish as their tail is still flapping!”
Dan was always a prankster, too. He would put on his Halloween mask and hide outside around corners, always scaring Kari and/or Dani. Another memory was one day in March, when as children they loaded up into the truck to go remove the ice shack off the bay. While carefully driving on the ice with the windows, they heard ‘SNAP!’ Dan then yelled, “Shirley, open the doors!” That was the day trauma hit, and Kari no longer fishes, lol. Dani remembers one day this past summer, when their father came home from town, sat down on the bench by the front door, and yelled, “Dani, get me my other oxygen tank!” Dani, yelling back as she brought the tank, shouted, “HOLY balls, if you can yell that loud, you're not lacking oxygen!” They both laughed a great deal after that one. Diana, Dan’s third daughter, treasures memories with dad getting together for birthdays, holidays, special time spent with family, and their meetings together when in town.
One of the most cherished traditions Dan certainly enjoyed, was meeting close friends at the local Perkins over the course of 35 years, having “morning coffee with the guys” including Toby Marcovich, Byron, Vern, Chuck, Gary, and Mark Androsky, along with many other friends in the group.
Dan is a wonderful man, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be dearly missed by all. He is survived by his daughters Kari (Stolquist) Peterson, Dani Stolquist, and Diana (Roger) Johnson; brother Terry (Judy) Stolquist, sister Jerri (Garry) Chatfield; ex-wife/friend Shirley (Mark) Knudston, 8 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Pat (Stolquist) Chimeleski, Mary Lou (Stolquist) Harrison, Birdie (Stolquist) Bennett.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Solvay Hospice House for the excellent care they provided to Dan.
Celebration of Dan’s Life will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 3:00pm – 6:00pm at Aces on 29th, 2827 Oakes Ave, Superior, WI 54880, (218-786-5829).
