Obituary of Craig Steven Mattson

Craig Steven Mattson, 75, of Duluth Minnesota, passed away on September 27th, 2024 surrounded by his family at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Craig is preceded in death by his parents Otto and Elaine Mattson, first wife Susan (Otto) Mattson and son Otto Mattson.

Craig’s good nature and loving spirit is carried on by his wife, Debra (Voigt) Mattson, daughter, Naomi (Byers) Smith and her husband Mark Smith, son, Chad Byers and his wife Jessy Goble; Siblings, Colin and wife Jan Mattson, Cindy Mattson, Carrie (Mattson) and husband Jim Merrick, Clay and wife Helga Mattson. He will be greatly missed by all his grandchildren, Emmaly, Elane, Laiten, River, Gentry, Olivia and one great granddaughter Ivy Mae, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Craig fought a heroic battle against many physical illnesses for over a decade. Despite spending much of that time in and out of the hospital, he never lost his sense of humor. Throughout his entire journey, he cracked jokes, created lasting memories with his grandchildren, and even enjoyed gathering with his friends. He had a great ability to make others smile and his sense of humor will be missed.

Craig graduated Denfeld High School (class of 1967) and was a proud graduate of the Duluth Area Institute of Technology where he used his degree as an Electrician for a 38 year career at Northwestern Bell/Quest. Being a talented and hardworking man, Craig was always ready to step in and help those around him. He was an adept pool player, an avid hunter and skilled marksman as an active member serving as President for many years of the Northwestern Gun Club. Craig loved his family and friends without reservation and was greatly loved in return. He will be missed immeasurably.

To honor Craig’s memory a gathering will be held at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center (305 E 2nd St, Superior, WI 54880) October 13th, from 1-3 pm. Due to severe family allergies please refrain from use fragrances of any kind.
