Obituary of Terrence Paul Horrigan
Terrence P. Horrigan M.D., age 77, passed away June 8, 2018 at his home in Stacy, Minnesota.
He was born in Virginia, Minnesota to the late Harold “Hap” Horrigan and Elizabeth “Betty”
Horrigan Engel. He attended Virginia Junior College and the University of Minnesota where he
met and married Diana Schlichting.
After graduating from the University of Minnesota Medical School, he moved to a rotating
internship at Harbor General in Torrance, CA. Returning to Minnesota, he worked as a general
practitioner for three years in Ely, Minnesota but felt a need to increase his surgical skills. He
completed his surgical residency with Dr. Perry at St. Paul-Ramsey. A recruiting phone call
from Dr. Ankeney in Cleveland, Ohio led him to a cardiothoracic surgical residency at Case
Western Reserve University. He practiced in Cleveland for 13 years, beginning at University
Hospitals, followed by Lutheran Hospital, and Cleveland Metro General Hospital. He worked
with the Veterans Administration in both Cleveland and Minneapolis, as well as Hennepin
County Medical Center in Minneapolis. He then finished his career at Regions Hospital in St.
Paul, Minnesota, from which he retired after 16 years as chief of cardiovascular and thoracic
surgery. He was avidly involved in education at both Case Western and the University of
Minnesota.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Diana, and their three children Jessica Bittence
(J.C.), Brian (Gretchen) and Patrick (Sarah), grandchildren Ethan, Hannah, Levi, Madeline,
Noah, Sarah, and Zelodine, and a brother John (Marilyn).
His hobbies included a passion for his dogs, KO and Maddie, wooden boats, cooking,
gardening, and trips to the cabin.
As per his wishes, no services will be held. A private burial will take place in Virginia,
Minnesota.
