Obituary of Richard P. Hoffmann

Hoffmann, Richard P. "Dick" 88, passed away on April 25, 2016 at the Minnesota Veterans Home - Minneapolis, where he lived for the past 13 years. Dick was born in St. Paul on June 2, 1927. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946. Upon returning from the service, he enrolled in the University of Minnesota and graduated in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He joined Hoffmann Electric, an electrical contractor founded by his father, ultimately rising to CEO. He founded NuComp Systems in 1963. In his later years, he developed residential and commercial real estate before retiring in 1998. Over the years, Dick's community involvement was extensive and included service to the St. Paul YMCA, Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, St. Paul Chamber of Commerce, St. Paul Rehabilitation Center, St Paul Rotary Club, Arden Hills City Council, Walker Methodist Residence and Health Center, and Hamline University. Dick enjoyed renovation and construction and took great pride in the home he built on Lake Johanna. He will be remembered for his entrepreneurial spirit and for his kindness, humor, generosity, and resilience. Dick was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Metta Hoffmann; and his twin brothers Edwin and Edward. He is survived by his wife Joan Hoffmann of Minneapolis; his daughters Molly Stearns (Jim) of Mercer Island, Washington and Debbie Hoffmann (Wiley Sharp) of Shorewood, Minnesota; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his ex-wife Mary Davies. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 19 at 3:00 pm at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, with a gathering beginning at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities, NW 5901, PO Box 1450, Minneapolis, MN 55485 or the Minnesota Veterans Home Recreation Fund, 5101 Minnehaha Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55417.
