Joel Martin Oyen

11/19/1976 - 7/18/2024

Joel grew up in St. Paul, MN, in a neighborhood full of sights and sounds of childhood play—big wheels, swing sets, and inflatable backyard pools in the summer; hockey skates, snow forts and red plastic sleds in the winter. He attended elementary school at Webster Magnet and enjoyed team sports at the Linwood recreation Center.

Joel went on to Highland Park for his junior and senior high school years. At Highland he played football for the “Scots” and excelled in mathematics. After high school he pursued coursework in the School of Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

As an adult, Joel found success in various service industry jobs including hotel hospitality and room service, pizza preparation and delivery, InstaCart shopping and delivery, and food service at senior living facilities (mainly serving meals to the residents).He appreciated the camaraderie of the face to face interaction with other workers and the people he served. He liked telling jokes, doing imitations and making people laugh and groan.

Throughout his life, Joel greatly valued spending time with family members—fishing in Ontario, hunting pheasants in western Minnesota, gathering for family reunions at Green Lake, and cheering for the Vikings as he watched the games on TV with his father. His presence around our family’s Thanksgiving and Christmas tables will be greatly missed.

Joel was preceded in death by his father, Martin Carr Oyen. He is survived by his mother, Ann; his brother; Matthew (Jennifer); nephew, Carter; niece, Mara; aunt Marilyn (Michael) Carlson; aunt, Charlotte (Ronald) Souter and five loving, caring cousins. A Service of Remembrance will be held for him on August 24^th, at Central Lutheran Church, 333 S 12^th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55404.
