Terry Shima

Obituary of Terry E. Shima

Terry E. Shima, son of Eugene Martin Shima and Mildred Pauline (Briggs) Shima, was born in 1952 and died suddenly and unexpectedly at home of heart-related causes on June 7 , 2024. He began working as a "soda jerk" at age 9 at his parents' pharmacy, Palace Drug Store, in Norwood, MN, where his pay was all the ice cream he could eat and his parents' contributions to his college fund. From there he went on to the University of Minnesota, earning degrees in Economics and Business Administration, which he parlayed into a 40-year career in corporate research and development at The Deluxe Corporation, then located in Shoreview, MN, retiring in 2019. Terry was a devoted and loving son, brother, uncle, husband, friend and "Dog Dad" to his "Golden Girls" Scout, Gracie and now Gina. Terry was quiet and unassuming. He lived in the world in good faith. It never occurred to him to question anyone's motives. Terry's kindness and steadiness knew no bounds. Married for 41 years to the sometimes-cantankerous Maggie Lutz. Yes, Terry was truly a saint. He made me a better person. In the end, he gave the gift of life to many others through his blood, tissue and organ donations. Terry is preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, George and Helen Lutz of Minneapolis, MN, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family members, most recently Dr. Jeffrey C. Reid. He is survived by his sister, Mary Reid, of Raleigh, NC, nephew Eric Reid and his family, also of Raleigh, niece Sarah Rawald and her family of Charlotte, NC, sisters-in-law Mary and Martha, brother-in-law Chuck, many cousins, extended family members and friends, and, of course by the aforementioned Maggie Lutz. There will be a visitation and short service followed by a light luncheon, starting at 10:00 on Friday, June 21, 2024, all at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, located at 4343 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55409. Attendees are encouraged to share their memories of Terry during the service. Many thanks to the St. Paul Fire Rescue and Police Departments and to our wonderful Linwood Avenue neighbors. If so desired, tax-deductible donations may be made to the University of Minnesota Foundation for the Terry E. Shima and Margaret A. Lutz "Touch of Grace" Scholarship. Donations may be sent to: UMF, P.O. Box 860266, Minneapolis, Mn 55486-0266.
