Robert Helmen

Obituary of Robert "Bob" Helmen

Robert "Bob" Helmen, age 93 of Minneapolis, was called to be with Jesus on June 4, 2024. Bob was born on April 14, 1931 to Stanley and Edythe Helmen on the family farm in Milaca Township, the second of three children. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, graduated from Milaca High School, and attended Minnesota School of Business.

He began his accounting career at International Milling (International Multifoods) in Minneapolis. He was transferred to New Ulm where he met the love of his life, Betty. They were married in March of 1960. They transferred to Buffalo, NY for one year before returning to Minneapolis and starting their family. They were blessed with 4 children. He finished his career at International Dairy Queen, retiring in 1996 to become chief cook at home.

Bob was always ready with a joke or pun. He was active at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, serving in various capacities over the years. He enjoyed biking, cross-country skiing, fishing, gardening, and card games. He became a master at packing the car for family camping trips.

He was very involved in the lives of his grandchildren, attending baseball games (followed by press conferences and root beer floats at grandma and grandpa’s) enjoying their plays and musicals and taking them on bike outings, and camping adventures.

After retirement, he and Betty traveled to many destinations including Israel, Japan, China, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and an Alaskan cruise celebrating their 50th anniversary. He also enjoyed outings to movies and stage plays.

Despite many health challenges, he remained optimistic and enjoyed life. Above all, he trusted in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Bob is survived by Betty, his wife of 64 years; daughter Julie; sons Dan (Yuko) and Matt (Renee); daughter-in-law Lori; grandchildren Elaina (Ben) and Caleb (Emily) and sister Leona. He was preceded in death by son Tim and brother Clair.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, June 21st, 11 AM at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 3901 1st Avenue South, Minneapolis 55409 with Visitation 1 hour prior to service.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host:

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.
