Obituary of Urszula Materska

URSZULA MATERSKA

Passed away on 4 May. 2024 after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Warsaw, Poland (a number of years ago). Arriving in the U.S. at the age of 20 in search of a better life despite having no relatives in the U.S. and speaking no English.

Urszula left her home country in 1982 as the Soviet Union imposed martial law during Poland’s Solidarity Movement. She spent months in a refugee camp in Austria before being sponsored by Catholic Charities in the U.S.

Urszula dedicated her life to helping others, working as a nursing assistant, a home health aide, volunteering with Little Brothers/Sisters for the Elderly and eventually serving individuals in recovery at Vinland National Treatment Center in Loretto, MN and at Westside Sober Living in Hopkins and Minnetonka.

Urszula loved Life. She loved her flower gardens, her birds, plants, nature and all living things (except spiders) No spiders were welcome.

Urszula is survived by her soulmate Mike Sorbel of Maple Plain, her Mother, Sister, Brother, nieces, nephews and other family in Poland as well as many friends she has touched along the way in the U.S.
