Obituary of Edwin Oliver Hawkins




SUNSET: MAY 9, 2024

Mr. Edwin Oliver Hawkins passed away May 9, 2024.

Edwin was born in Gilmer, Texas, July 9, 1919 to Mabel C. and Benjamin Hawkins.

He was preceded in death by his Mother Mable C. Hawkins; Father Benjamin Hawkins; Brother Robert Ozene ; Sister Celestine L. Hawkins Wooten; wife of 60 years, Vivian T. Hawkins and Daughter Valerie J. Hawkins.

Survived by daughter Marilyn L. Hawkins; Grandson Derrick C. Watson, son Thomas Paige and a host of extended family members and friends.

He was drafted in the Army in 1942. Served in England, France, Belgium, Germany, Japan and Korea.

He married Vivian T. Gunter, October 14, 1949 in Mason City, Ia.

He retired from the Army in 1965, with the rank of CWO-3. Worked at UNISYS from 1965-1986, as a Memory Engineer Tech. Worked for Budget Rent-A-Car from 1986-1989.

He was a member of Johnson Chapel CME Church in Paris, Texas; St. Matthew CME Church in Wichita, Kansas. Joined Park Avenue Methodist Church in 1965. At Park Avenue Methodist Church, he served on several committees: The Administrative Board for 25 years; served as President of the United Methodist Men, oversaw the Men’s iPrayer Breakfast, Bible Study and organized the annual Men’s Retreat. He was also Head Usher for years.

Mr. Edwin Hawkins also served as President for the Field Regina Neighborhood, where he and his family lived.

His yard was his pride and joy, especially his roses.

Services have been held at First Memorial Funeral Chapel on May 15, 2024; followed by a Full Military Honors burial at Fort Snelling.

We are grateful for how Mr. Edwin O. Hawkins blessed our lives. Memories of his kindness, patience, smile, devotion to his family, his faith will forever impact our lives.
