Obituary of Earl Vincent Johnson

Earl Vincent Johnson, 100, passed away on May 15, 2024 in the hospital with Irma, his loving wife of 48 years, holding his hand and talking to him.

He was the son of Albert and Alice Johnson. He was born in 1923 and grew up in St. Paul. He graduated from Johnson High School in 1941. During World War II he served in the Navy stationed in New Hebrides in the South Pacific and was discharged in 1945.

Earl was a goal tender for Johnson High School and played semi-pro hockey for many years with the St. Paul 7-Up Saints. He was a talented carpenter and furniture builder as early as in high school. He served an apprenticeship at Swanson’s Cabinet Shop in St. Paul, worked for Krause Anderson Construction for many years, and then changed careers working as a carpenter, supervisor, and eventually retiring from the St. Paul Schools. He was never content to sit still and was continually busy with projects. He was blessed with good health and a bright mind for over 100 years. Amazingly he built kitchen shelving and refurbished a kitchen drawer this past year. His family and friends knew they could always find almost any needed hardware or tool in his well-stocked and organized garage.

Earl and Irma enjoyed many years living in Winter Haven, Florida where they enjoyed sports and have many medals to prove it. Of course, there were always projects in Florida too. They returned to Minnesota over 15 years ago.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Alice and Albert, his sister Dorothy Altier, his brother David and daughters Barbara Jean Johnson and Robyn Sieber. He is survived by his wife Irma, his daughter Barbara (Andy Peterson); their children: Amanda and Adam (wife Sara), and grandson Aydan; his son Ed Stepnick (wife Lona); their children Paige and Jenna; his son Gary Johnson; Gary’s daughter: Adrianne (husband Craig) and grandchildren Tennessee, Loretta, Peter, and Edith; Gary’s daughter: Emily and granddaughter Lilyan; Robyn's son: Timothy Sieber and his children Taj and Mya; and, Earl’s sister Miriam Jarmin (Marvin); as well as many nieces and nephews.

Husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Earl will be missed.
