Obituary of Jason Todd Newkirk

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of our brother Jason Todd Newkirk of Burnsville MN on May 8, 2024, at the age of 57 years.

Jason was born August 25th, 1966 to Thomas and Judith (Brantner) Newkirk in Willmar, MN. Following high school Jason continued his studies at Normandale and the University of MN, studying Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement. Jason's service career started at the Mall of America as a security Officer, Bike Officer, and then Sergeant. In 2007 he joined his forever family with the Metro Transit Police Department, where he proudly served for his remaining 17 years.

First and foremost Jason’s passion was working.  He was a proud and dedicated Officer in the rare times he wasn’t on the job he enjoyed spending time with family and friends (family game nights were the best)  he enjoyed movies, reading books (expansive collections of both),  MN Twins Baseball, visits to the MN Zoo, Darts, Casinos, Roadtrips and Rodeos.

JJ was not a man of many words, those who knew him may describe JJ as being similar to an introverted, grumpy big ole bear with a short fuse and a dry yet hilarious sense of humor, with piercing beautiful blue eyes and a huge heart.

Jason was a child of God with a strong and growing relationship that brought him peace and strength through these very difficult months.

Jason is preceded in death by Thomas Newkirk (father), Judith Brantner (mother), Norbert Brantner (stepfather) Robin Newkirk (brother), Wray and Violet Newkirk (paternal Grandparents) Norman and Myrtle Ockwig (maternal Grandparents)

Jason is survived by :   Sisters: Tonnette (Tony) Sponsler, Tyra (Mark) Thompson, Marlys Newkirk (stepmother), Tony Brantner (stepbrother) Nieces and Nephews: Samantha, Kelsey, and Elliot Sponsler, Zachary, Ethan, and Emme Thompson,  Great Niece, Kaari Sponsler, Best Friend, Emily Gilpin and numerous amazing loving Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Friends.

Funeral Services are to be held on Friday, June 14th, 2024 visitation starts at 10:00 and service at 11:00 Cedar Valley Church, 8600 Bloomington Avenue S, Bloomington MN 55425
