Obituary of James (Jim) Karl Durham

James (Jim) Karl Durham, a beloved resident of Saint Paul, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at the Minnesota Veteran's Home. He was 59 years old.

Born in Bloomington, Indiana, Jim had a passion for travel and service from a young age. As a child, he accompanied his mother, Margaret Durham, on trips to France, Switzerland, and Germany. After graduating from Saint Paul Academy in 1983, Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served until his honorable discharge in 1987. During his time in the Marines, Jim had the opportunity to visit the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, and Japan.

Following his military service, Jim enrolled in college at the University of Minnesota, graduating with a degree in economics and a double-minor in math and German. He then had the privilege of working in the office of Senator Paul Wellstone, an experience he cherished and often spoke about with great pride.

Jim’s commitment to service led him to join the Peace Corps, taking him to Nepal, where he taught 4th and 5th grade math in a remote village. There, he formed a special bond with a Tibetan Mastiff puppy named Raj Chandra. Unfortunately, an injury to his hand forced Jim to return to the United States. Undeterred, he returned to Nepal in 1995 for two more years of service.

Jim became a resident of the Minnesota Veteran's Home in 2005, where he remained until his passing. He was an integral part of the community, often serving as a mediator between residents and passionately advocating for their rights in local politics.

Jim is survived by his sister, Emily (Gabriel) Durham, his niece, Genoveva, and two nephews, Rory and Raul. His kind heart, dedication to service, and unwavering spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at Unity Church on May 23rd at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Animal Humane Society, The Minnesota DFL, or The Nepal Music Archive in Jim’s memory
