Obituary of Russell Schmitz

Russell Schmitz, age 86 of Woodbury, MN

Passed peacefully at his home surrounded by family on March 26, 2024.

Preceded in death by parents Karl and Erna Schmitz. Survived by loving wife Joan of 64 years, sons John (Suzanne), David, Steven (Sue), Michael (Holly), 9 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Russ attended Murray High School, and earned degrees from Mankato State University and the University of Saint Thomas.  He also served in the US Navy, where he was based in Charleston, South Carolina.

Known as “Herr Schmitz” by students, Russ enjoyed a 38-year career in education teaching German at Roseville Area Schools. Beyond the classroom, he coached youth athletics and led student trips to Germany.

Russ enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially in the of company family, friends and colleagues. A dedicated grandfather, he could always be found at his grandchildren’s events.

The family will gather for a private Celebration of Life.
