Gerald McGuire

Obituary of Gerald William McGuire

Of South Minneapolis; age 88, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his father, his mother, and siblings. Jerry and his twin brother, Jim, were the youngest of his mother’s six children and her stepchildren. Born in Danvers, MN, April 7, 1935, he graduated from Benson, MN high school in 1954. Following 2 years in the army, he graduated from St. Cloud State College and received his MSW/MA from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He worked as a social worker for Hennepin County and the State of MN Department of Corrections, followed by St. Paul public schools and Ramsey/Regions hospital ER.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia of 58 years, and two children: Matthew (Tammy) of Lakeville, MN and Kara Erolin (Jaime Brito) of Plantation, FL. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, Vincent, Grace, Devyn, Dylan, and Tiago. The kids are engaged in compiling a book of Jerryisms. Throughout the years he enjoyed many activities, including running marathons (twice in the Boston, as well as the first City of Lakes marathon). He has been the consummate fisherman (there’s always a bigger boat), bagpiper (Brian Boru Irish pipe band), woodworker, reader, and so much more. With the progression of macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s he slowly gave up these activities in recent years, but he still enjoyed time at his cabin in Nevis (since 1975) and his home in Port Charlotte, FL (since 2005). Memorials are preferred to one’s charity of choice. Special thanks to Ecumen Hospice, Havenwood Memory Care, and HCMC who cared so lovingly for Jerry. A celebration of Jerry’s life is pending.
