Mrkonich, Thomas (Tom) of Edina and White Bear Lake passed away peacefully on January 18, 2024, at the age of 94. Per Tom’s request, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of his life for immediate family members will be held later this summer.

Tom was born on July 25, 1929, in Crosby, MN to John and Katherine Mrkonich. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy, and his sisters Ruth Stukel and Jean Perpich. He is survived by his three children; Jana (Tim) Balfany, Kristen (Richard) Hubbs, and Jon (Sharon) Mrkonich; eleven grandchildren, extended family members and friends

Tom was proud of his service to his country in the US army-Korea. He graduated from St. Cloud State Teacher’s College and in 1959 received a master’s in education in Greeley, Colorado. Tom was united in marriage to Dorothy (Evanson) Mrkonich on August 15th, 1959. He taught 8th grade earth science in St. Louis Park and retired in 1989 after 30 years in the profession.

Tom enjoyed an active and full retirement. He relished spending time with his family and friends, especially at Hay Lake. He loved traveling and wintering in Arizona, woodworking and making stained glass, watching football and following the stock market. Tom appreciated a good Manhattan and would often remark, “not bad for a kid from Balkan Street.” Blessed be his memory.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the caring staff at Waverly Gardens and HealthPartners hospice.
