Richard Jakubek

Obituary of Richard Jakubek

Richard Jakubek passed away December 26, 2023 at St. Luke’s Hospital.

He was born in Duluth on October 18, 1943 to Joseph and Margaret (VanCalbergh) Jakubek.

Richard was home on leave from the Air Force when he met the love of his life, Victoria Lenard.  It was “love at first sight” for both of them and they were married for 58 ½ years, having gotten married on May 8, 1965.  Their relationship was a beautiful example to all who saw them together.

Richard, or Dick, as many knew him, was a Master Plumber by occupation but truly a jack-of-all trades, as he enjoyed remodeling several rental properties and a cabin in Solon Springs.  Even inspiring all three of his kids to own and remodel their own rental properties.  In his mid 50’s he found a new talent as he discovered karaoke!  Richard’s voice greatly resembled Elvis Presley’s and he would get many requests to sing Elvis’ songs at the American Legion and elsewhere.  Singing brought such joy to Richard, even singing “Trouble” to his granddaughter over FaceTime while he was in the hospital just days before his passing.

Richard is deeply missed by his devoted wife, Vicki and their children Helana (Robert) Jamison, Dominic (Tonia Meyers) Jakubek and Kristy (John) Strom.  His legacy also includes 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, with a 13th great-granddaughter due in April. He is survived by his brother Daryl (Barb) Jakubek of Duluth and sister Sandra (Jim) Wrenfrow of Nevada and their families.

All who miss him dearly and fondly remember his gift of gab, jokes and brain teasers.  Always keeping them in his front pocket to share with those he spent time with.  His children especially will remember the sound advice he always had for them.  Richard’s wish was that his kids and grandkids would “know him”, and they feel that he succeeded in making that wish come true!!

A visitation will be held at St. James Catholic Church, 715 N. 57th Ave. West on January 17, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m.  In addition, a celebration of life will take place on Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 5 - 8 p.m. at the American Legion Post 71 in West Duluth.
