Obituary of Betty Mae O’Donnell Ritchie
Betty Mae O'Donnell Ritchie.
She was born June 5, 1938, in Brookston.
She worked tirelessly on the family dairy farm until her 18th birthday when she enrolled in St. Luke's school of nursing program in Duluth. Shortly afterward, she met and married Earl Walter Ritchie and together they raised a son and a daughter.
Betty and Earl owned and operated many newly formed taxicab companies beginning in the early 60's and for over three decades throughout the Twin Ports. When not spending time at the cabin, they traveled the country in their motorhome. After Earl passed away, Betty returned to her first career love, the healthcare industry. She served as an independent personal caregiver, then as office manager at Lakeshore Lutheran Home. A permanent plaque was awarded at Lakeshore for all her volunteer work over the years.
The last chapter of Betty's life was filled with much love and joy at her new home, Aftenro. For six years, she made countless friends and continued sharing her natural "caregiver" spirit and participating in volunteer work for her extended family at Aftenro. She loved making Apple pies at the annual fund raising event, participating in fashion shows and watching "Blue Bloods". Her last few days were spent with such contentment as the staff helped make her final journey with such peace. Our hearts are saddened at her passing. We were truly blessed to have her in our lives. She will be greatly missed.
VISITATION: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service on Wednesday, June 16, in First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4100 Grand Avenue, Duluth. Burial at Oneota Cemetery at a later date.
