Obituary of Andrea Matthews Clark
Andrea Matthews Clark, 61, passed away peacefully on Oct. 21, 2023, surrounded by family. Andrea was born on 11/06/61 in Ontario, Canada, and grew up in Wayzata, MN. She graduated from Macalester College with highest honors and attended the MFA program in creative writing at Hamline University. During her career she worked at Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis StarTribune, and Minnesota Public Radio, where she was a writer. She also served on the Minnesota State Arts Board. Andrea had many interests, was fluent in several languages, and was a classically-trained pianist. Andrea spent the last few decades of her life fighting her body, whether the Loeys-Dietz and the problems inherent in that syndrome, her lungs, or cancer, her final foe. Andrea loved people - their companionship and their stories. She loved animals, old films (especially noir), New Orleans, music, and anything beautiful. Andrea adored her nephews Alec and Evan. She loved spending time with, and reading to, her granddaughters Phoebe and Chloe. But most of all, she loved Ed. Ed was her light and her love and her heart. Andrea is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. John and June Matthews. Andrea will be dearly missed by her husband Ed, of MN; her stepdaughter Zoë and two step granddaughters, Phoebe and Chloe, of CA; her sisters, Julia (John Friedmeyer) and Jocelyn (Steve Peterson) of MN, and Debbie Colson of England; nephews John and Joe Friedmeyer; Alec and Evan Peterson; nieces Nickie and Sarah Colson; her uncle Maurice Gregory, of England, extended family, numerous friends, and Andrea's beloved parrot, Azibo. Services will be held Dec. 6 from 5-8 p.m., at the Cremation Society of Minnesota (1979 Old Hudson Rd., St. Paul). The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota (https://wrcmn.org/), where Andrea spent many hours volunteering, and Our Lady of Peace Hospice in St. Paul (https://ourladyofpeacemn.org/), whose staff we wish to thank for their care and compassion.
