Sukhni Sookhlall was born in Georgetown, Guyana on December 2, 1929. She was the eldest of nine children and grew up in Cornelia Ida, Guyana. Sukhni was a hard worker and learned the meaning of sacrifice at a young age as she wasn't given the opportunity to get an education. In her early life, she was a field worker doing manual labor in the sugar cane fields in Guyana. When she was 15 years, she married Doman Sookhlall and together the two had 11 children - 2 boys and 9 girls. With the help of eldest son, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1981, starting a new chapter of her life in a new country. Shortly after, the rest of her 10 children immigrated to the U.S. and began their lives anew, as well. Sukhni was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She leaves behind an incredible legacy of 11 children, 26 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren.
