Obituary of Lois Elaine Maine
Lois Elaine Maine, 91, passed away on October 4, 2023, at St. Luke's Hospital. She was born August 31, 1932, to Elmer and Mabel Sundstrom and raised in Soudan, Minnesota. She attended St. Luke's School of Nursing in Duluth becoming a registered nurse, first working in Wyandotte, Michigan. She returned to Duluth to attend St. Mary's School of Anesthesia becoming a nurse anesthetist at St. Luke's Hospital. She furthered her education earning her B.A.S. degree in Community Health Education from UMD in 1984. She also worked at Lakeshore Lutheran Home and the Memorial Blood Center.
Lois married Kenneth Maine in 1956 and they made their home in Duluth. While their children were growing up, she enjoyed caring for foster babies and had a daycare. Lois and Ken traveled extensively seeing Europe, the Caribbean Islands, China, and much of the United States.
She was involved with innumerable groups like the US-China People's Friendship Association, Beta Sigma Phi, Lakeside AARP, Duluth Women's Club, Duluth Symphony Auxiliary, Lakeshore Auxiliary, Glensheen Historic Estate, Sister Cities Växjö committee, and was a member of Good Shepherd and Mount Olive Lutheran Churches.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth of 58 years, her parents, and nephew. She is survived by her sister Lorraine Olson; children Kim Muller (Sam Fry), Lisa Sturm (Dick), Scott Maine, and Lynne Maine (Gerry Sjerven); 8 grandchildren Kristin Pennington, Carl and Jesse Unger, Samantha Day, David Maine, and Cason, Soren, and Amity Sjerven; and 8 great-grandchildren; and 3 nieces.
Visitation will be at 11:00 with service at noon on Monday, October 23 at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd with light meal to follow. Private inurnment at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Memorial Blood Center or The Duluth Women's Club.
