Obituary of David John Mickelson

David John Mickelson, 56, of Hibbing, Minn., died on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016 at his home. Dave was born in Ely, Minn. to A.W. "Bill" Mickelson and Virginia "Gina" (Gravelle) Mickelson. Dave was raised in Babbitt, Two Harbors, Ely and Duluth, Minn. He graduated from Duluth East High School in 1978, and then joined the U.S. Navy. Dave served as a gunner's mate for four years on the frigate USS Valdez, based out of Boston. Dave worked for Hibbing Electronics and later for Reptron before being employed by Keewatin Taconite (Keetac) for the last 11 years. He was a member of United Steelworkers Union No. 2660. Dave enjoyed walking quietly in the woods while looking for the elusive grouse. He dabbled at deer and elk hunting, and was even occasionally successful. He was a avid golfer, but his real passion was fishing. Dave especially enjoyed an annual fly-in fishing trip in northern Ontario with his brother-in-law Jeff. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Mary (Bill) Maydole. He is survived by his four siblings Bill (Peggy) Mickelson and Rick (Shelley) Mickelson of Two Harbors, Julie (Dan) Tarro of Ham Lake, Minn. and Sue (Jeff) Faust of Clearwater, Minn.; brother-in-law Bill Maydole; step-brothers David and Mark and stepsisters Cindy, Amy, Crystal, and Valerie; stepchildren Addison, Joe, and Amanda; his special aunt Elaine, aunts and uncles, and numerous nieces and nephews. His great-nieces are going to miss their "Uncle Mickey."
