Obituary of Marlys Anne Grothe Nelson

Marlys Anne Grothe Nelson was born on November 5th, 1933 in Skyberg, Minnesota to Louis and Esther Grothe.

Marlys grew up in Skyberg, MN and Old Concord, MN, where she attended the Old Concord Elemtary School (all 8 grades) taught by Janice Sathrum. Marlys attended West Concord, MN, High School and graduated there in 1951. Marlys began working at Mayo Clinic in Rochster, MN in June 1951 as a medical secretary until April 1952.

Louis and Esther and Patricia moved to Lindstrom, MN in April 1952 and Jacqueline and Harriet had moved to Duluth, MN. David remained in West Concord, MN until he graduated from High School and then moved to Lindstrom, MN.

Marlys Grothe moved to Duluth in 1952 and lived with Harriet and John Oland. Marlys worked at the Oliver Mining Div. of US Steel and Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Ry. Co. as a secretary in various positions in Messenger service, Pensions & Insurance, and Marketing and President's Office also as a secretary.

Marlys was married to Gene Robert Nelson May 13, 1953. Gene was in the service so continued his term in Korea one week later for 18 months, was discharged in 1955.

Marlys and Gene were blessed with a son, James Robert Nelson, on January 25, 1958, after miscarrying 3 times so was one Happy Day.

Shortly after James was born, our brother, David Louis, was killed in a car accident after getting a flat tire. He and a friend from Lindstrom were both killed close to Pine City, MN, by the car side-swiping David's car, also put the girl who was holding a flashlight in the hospital for a year. Very sad. That happened in evening on a side road where they had been at a dance.

Marlys was preceded in death by her father, Louis Grothe, 69, mother, Esther Grothe, 77, Jacqueline Maneske (59), Harriet Oland (64) David (22) and Patricia (80).

Marlys is survived by her son, James Nelson & wife, Kathy, Grandson, Samuel Nelson, Graddaughter, Samantha Folger & husband, Mitch Folger. Also many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

Marlys requested no services but, donations in her memory can be sent to Christ Lutheran Church, 2415 Ensign Street, Duluth MN 55811 .
