Obituary of Lauren Jerlad Hiukka

Lauren Jerlad Hiukka (Larry), 95, passed on June 27, 2018 at his home in Diamond Willow Assisted Living at Lester Park. He was born on November 10, 1922 to parents Walter and Ellen Hiukka of Esko. He is preceded in death by his former wife, Mayme Hiukka, and daughter Janet (Hiukka-Crotteau) Snyder. He is survived by his children, Jean King, Denver, CO, JoAnn Hiukka, Duluth, John Hiukka and Jerry Hiukka of Two Harbors, 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Larry graduated from Esko High School in 1940 and was on the Duluth Junior College boxing team before becoming a naval aviation cadet during World War II. He often told the story of having boxed John Glenn, the former astronaut, in Iowa City preflight in 1942. Larry was a pilot with the United States Marine Corps in WWII and was honorably discharged in 1947. He completed his degree in economics at UMD in 1948. He was an accomplished accordion player, beginning at age 12 as the "draw" in a dance band and played professionally for many years. He was a performer on several occasions for Finn Fest on the Iron Range and Duluth and continued to play well into his 90's for entertainment. He retired as a supervisor from U.S. Steel. Larry's love for flying included working as a bush pilot and later with the local Civil Air Patrol. His love for the outdoors included a passion for hunting and fishing. A Celebration of Life was privately held with family members. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the care provided by the staff of Diamond Willow and St. Luke's Hospice.
