Shirley League

Obituary of Shirley Mae League

Ms. Shirley Mae League, passionately known as " Shirley Girl" , 79, returned to her heavenly home on Wednesday October 26, 2016 at 8pm at home, after a diagnosis of lung cancer surrounded by her daughters Joy and Trudy and son Charles. Shirley previously fought and survived breast and colon cancer. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace. Shirley was born to the late Richard and Ella White, in Minneapolis, MN on November 30, 1936, the eldest daughter of 4 sisters and 2 brothers. After her father's death in 1949, Shirley was raised in Campbellsville, Kentucky by her paternal Uncle and Aunt, the late Levi and Mary Willie White. She was educated at Lincoln Institute in Simpsonville, Kentucky, an all black boarding High School and graduated in 1954. Shirley was as she like to say a "domestic engineer" and raised her children to love the Lord. She was immersed in Faith that would be her support from an early age. She was very active in her church as Church Secretary, Angle Choir Director, Adult Choir Member and Sunday School Teacher. Shirley had a beautiful singing alto voice and taught herself to play the piano. After her children were grown she worked outside the home and retired in 2001 as an Executive Secretary for the CEO of US Bank in Minneapolis. Shirley was a "go getter" and a superior "handy woman" and fishing enthusiast. There was nothing Shirley found impossible to do when it came to fixing things and bleach was her go to for solving everything. She loved to collect Tea Pots, play bingo and make her visits to the casino playing for fun, had a green thumb and never passed by a rummage sale. She loved to watch Price Is Right, all the Judge shows, River Monsters and Family Feud. Her favorite was Antique Road Show because she saw items that brought back good memories and she compared the value of her own keepsakes.. Shirley will be dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate the fact that she is at peace and at home with her creator. Shirley leaves to cherish and love her memory, 3 children Charles ( Candace) Harpole, Joy ( Will) Riley, Trudy ( Leroy Fondren) Harpole, her sisters, Carol Armstrong and Judy Thomas, grandchildren Chantel Harpole, Rev. Michael ( Katena) Cain, Tara Riley, Cadell (Angela Young) King, Derall King, Jessica Holden, Joel Vangel, Heather, Brittney and Allyssa Harpole, great grandchildren Trevon, Gabrielle, Deja, Eden, Jordan, Aaliyah and Kaylee, nieces, nephews, loving friends and special family pets. Shirley was also preceded in death by her brothers Harry and Clifford White, sister Beverly Loan and step father Jessie Patterson. Shirley made her wishes known to her children that she wanted to pass at home in her own bed, she did not want a funeral service and wished to be cremated. The scattering of the ashes will take place at a later date on a beautiful summer day that she may have spent fishing. The family is grateful for prayers, condolences and memories, in lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to Promise Community Church, 141 Depot Dr., Waconia, MN 55387. Cards accepted in care of Trudy Harpole 19 3RD AVE SE. Young America, MN 55397. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High. Psalm 92:1
