Obituary of Thomas C. Hutsell; PhD
Thomas Carlyle Hutsell, 77, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 3, 2016
after a courageous 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Tom was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 10, 1939 to Ann & Elbert (Bud) Hutsell.
He graduated with his PhD in Biochemistry from Purdue University. While there, he had
the honor of commanding the Purdue Drill Team for President John F. Kennedy. He
met his wife, Marge, while studying at Purdue.
He spent most of his career working at GD Searle pharmaceuticals, Chicago, IL, in
Research and Development. He moved to MN in 1989 and finished his career as Vice
President of Research and Development for St. Jude Medical.
When Tom retired in 1998, he spent more time doing what he loved best: gardening
and spending more time with family. He was an active member of the MN Gardener’s
Program for over 20 years. He enjoyed one last family vacation to Las Vegas this past
October where he thoroughly enjoyed quality time with family, hours of warm sunshine,
and a daily pina colada with an order of chips & guacamole poolside!
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Tom’s amazing medical and
support teams over the past year. Dr. Timothy Larson, Sara, Sandi, Heartland
Hospice, and the entire staff at Mpls MN Oncology.
Tom is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marge; his children Karen, Michael (Jenn), Tom
(Amy); grandchildren Megan, Kayla, Jon, Tommy, Scott, Sarah, Anna, and greatgrandchild
Aiden.
A casual Celebration of Life will be held Nov. 11, 2016 between 5-8 PM at Cremation
Society; 1979 Old Hudson Rd. St. Paul 651-789-0404. As much as Tom loved plants
and flowers, we think he would prefer your memorials and donations to go to the MN
Landscape Arboretum so that so many more in Minnesota can enjoy their true beauty.
