Obituary of Evelyn June Brophy

Evelyn June Brophy, 95, lifelong Duluthian, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016. Evelyn was born on June 10, 1921 in Duluth to Melvin and Theresa Fundanet. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1939, and also attended Duluth Business College. In 1941, she married James Brophy and together they raised four children in Morgan Park. She was proud to have been a MP resident for over 70 years and often spoke of it as wonderful community. They made lifelong friends and enjoyed good times there. During World War II, Evelyn worked for U.S. Steel. She then stayed home until 1965, when she went to work for Glass Block. After the death of her husband in 1967, she went to work for the City of Duluth Water & Gas Department, later moving to the Treasurer's Office as a Deputy City Treasurer until her retirement in 1986. She was also an Election Judge for many years. Evelyn was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, active in the VFW Women's Auxillary, American Legion, and Duluth Cribbage League. In one recent year, she was the Duluth Cribbage Champion, at title of which she was quite proud. She also was an avid Twins fan. Evelyn was fortunate to take many trips over the years. She traveled with family and friends to many interesting places, including road trips with her children and grandchildren. We have many good memories of those trips. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Jerry Fundanet; daughter, Mary Lou (2010); and son-in-law, Karl Wicklund (2016). She is survived by her son, Patrick (Linda) Brophy; daughters, Kathleen (Larry) Hinrichs and Barbara (John) Rodberg; grandchildren, Laura (David) Schauer, Amy Wicklund, Lisa (Mike) King, Melissa (Adam) Harshman, Daniel (Kristen) Hinrichs, Carrie Macea, John (Brook) Rodberg, James (Jill) Rodberg, and Jessica (Joe) Bottensek; 17 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law, Vernice Brophy.
