Obituary of Leonard (Lenny) Orie Hislop
Leonard (Lenny) Orie Hislop, passed away peacefully on March 19th 2023 at St Mary’s hospital in Rochester MN at the age 90. Leonard was a resident of Lake City MN. Born July 21st, 1932, in Lake City MN he was the son of Orie Robert Hislop and Olive Edith, née Krause.
Leonard served in United States Navy from 1950 – 1954. During the Korean war he was assigned to the USS Seiverling DE 441 and patrolled and bombed the North Korean coast. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, China Service Medal, Korean Service Ribbon (four stars).
Following the Navy Len graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from University of MN.
Len had a long career with the state of MN budget and planning office. Retiring in 1989. During his career he worked with the department of game and fish (now the DNR), the department of prisons and many others. His son Jeff enjoyed trips to the many field offices with him during the summers.
When his son was young Len was active in the YMCA Indian Guides program and lead many local council events. Following that Len and Jeff moved into the Boy Scout program.
Len was an Episcopalian and longtime member of St Paul’s on the Hill church until he retired and moved back to Lake City where he split his time between Christ Church Frontenac and St Mark’s in Lake City.
As an active Mason Len participated to the fullest in Masonic events with his lodge brothers. Many summer afternoons Len was in a local community parade as part of the Dragon Patrol or driving one of his MG’s in a parade. Len also volunteered at the Shrine Circus for many years.
Len made several trips to Scotland and was an avid believer in wearing a Kilt to many occasions as he owned several of them. He combined this with a regular tradition of hosting tea parties in his home or the garden in his backyard complete with a coy fishpond he maintained for many years. Len loved his garden and spent many hours perfecting it.
Len was preceded in death by his daughter Linda McCarthy, her husband Charlie and granddaughter Samantha (McCarthy) Berry. He is survived by his son Jeff and wife Jan Hislop. Len is also survived by grandchildren Charlie McCarthy (Blair), Mitch Hislop (Stephanie), Janna Dodd (Tyler), Ross Paulson (Jenna), Andrea Paulson, Grant Paulson; and great grandchildren Lucy and Josh Berry, Gus McCarthy, Gavin and Peyton Paulson, and Daxton Dodd.
A funeral will be held on Saturday May 6th, visitation at 11:00, service at 12:00 followed by a light lunch at St Mark’s Episcopal Church in Lake City MN. Interment will be at a later date at Fort Snelling Veterans cemetery.
