Obituary of Elsie V. Benson

Elsie Viola (Peterson) Benson passed away on July 3, 2018 at North Shore Estates in Duluth, MN. She was born to Gotfred and Agnes Peterson in Mahtowa, MN. and was a graduate of Barnum High School in 1940. As a young girl she developed an interest for sports, especially baseball, and became an avid, lifelong Minnesota Twins fan. Elsie moved to Duluth in 1941 and worked at Klearflax. Soon after, she married Hugo Benson in 1943, and from that union came five children and a lifetime of adventures in Duluth. Later she was employed at Minnesota Woolen and Bombardier. During this time Elsie was very active. She enjoyed her many travels and was always ready for bingo or a card game. Senior activities were important to her. She was past president of the Evergreen Senior Center and the Faith Haven Association. She was a faithful member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Hugo, son-in-law Russ Schoop, four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her children Roger (Mary) of Atwater, MN., Sandra Schoop of Boulder City, NV., Rick (Kris) of Proctor, MN., Darlene (Rick) Peterson of St. Cloud, MN., Steven of Los Angeles, CA., 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother Burton (Glendora) Peterson, Mahtowa, MN. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church on Thursday, August 2nd. Visitation at 10:00 AM followed by the service at 11:00 AM. It is acceptable to pay tribute to Elsie and her love of sports by wearing a favorite team shirt or jersey. The family would like to thank Keystone Bluffs and North Shore Estates for their kind and compassionate care.
