Obituary of Richard D. Christensen

Richard D. "Dick" Christensen, 85, of Hermantown, passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, at Chris Jensen. Dick was born Feb. 17, 1931, in Duluth, to Harold and Margaret (Wold) Christensen. He grew up in Duluth, graduated from Central High School and served in the Minnesota Army National Guard. He completed his plumbing apprenticeship in Duluth and worked as a journeyman plumber for Martin Wold Co. until they closed their business and then he started Dick Christensen Plumbing and Heating. Dick was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local II Union. After having a successful business, he retired in 1993. He was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on the Trustee Board, volunteered his services as a plumber and was an usher for many years. Dick served on the Boy Scout Troop committee at Trinity Lutheran Church and he also volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels. Dick enjoyed model railroading and belonged to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. He was always helpful to family/friends with home maintenance and general projects. He also had many feline companions over the years. Dick loved nature, always kept the bird feeders full and all creatures big and small were welcome. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jack and Thomas Christensen. Dick is survived by his wife, Patricia; son Jeff Christensen; daughter Sally Smith; sister-in-law JoAnn Christensen; cousin Bill (Karen) Utick; nieces, nephews and cousins; his cat, Griffin; and grand-cat Arnie. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, in Trinity Lutheran Church, 1108 E. Eighth St. Memorials are appreciated to Trinity Lutheran Church, Animal Allies or St. Luke's Foundation-Hospice.
